Spicy Honey Turkey Burgers with Jalapenos & Havarti

So I’m a sucker for a good burger.  Especially when they’re unique burgers.  I recently had a burger where they slathered a turkey burger with honey and served it with jalapenos and I was in love!  I thought, I could make something like this, but better!  So here we are in burger land with my crazy creation.  I know it might sound weird, but this is seriously a winning combination.  A little smokiness from the paprika, some sweetness from the honey and brioche, and some heat with those charred jalapenos.  Finish it off with a little cooling from the Havarti, and you have a delicious burger! Plus, by using turkey instead of beef, you’re eliminating some fat and cholesterol.  If you’re not into the bread scene, feel free to substitute the bread with a lettuce or chard bun. Trust me, this will soon be a repeat recipe in your family.  Enjoy!

Ingredients:

Burgers:

1 lb. of ground turkey
½ cup of finely diced onion
3 cloves of garlic, minced
1 tsp paprika
1 T Dijon mustard
2 T Worcestershire sauce
Dash of red pepper flakes (more/less depending on heat level)
¼ cup of honey
½ cup of almond flour
Salt and pepper to taste
Butter for pan
4 brioche buns
8 slices of Havarti cheese
Excess honey for drizzling, yum!
Burger topping preferences (I like baby greens)

Quick Pickled Jalapenos:

4 Jalapenos (or more if you want more spice!)
1 cup apple cider vinegar
¼ cup of honey

Directions:

For the jalapenos, in a small container, mix honey and vinegar together until honey has dissolved completely.  Slice jalapenos into discs and stir them into honey/vinegar mixture.  The longer these set the less spicy they get.  These can also be put in a sealed container and used for a few weeks.  They’re one of my favorite toppings for tacos!

In a large bowl, combine turkey, onion, garlic, paprika, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, red pepper flakes, honey, almond flour, salt, and pepper.  Mix until evenly combined.  Form into 4 large burger patties.  Toast buns in pan and set aside.

Preheat pan (make sure it’s non-stick as these have sugar in them) to a low heat (don’t want it too hot or it will burn) and add butter once warm. You want to ensure a good sear, so don’t touch these too much or they’ll far apart. Cook turkey patties for 6 minutes on each sides until golden brown and/or until internal temp reaches 165 degrees.  Tip** These also cook GREAT in the oven and will safe you some pan mess.  Just cook at 350 degrees on a cookies sheet, covered with parchment, for about 20 minutes, until they reach 165 degrees. Havarti cheese and cook until melty. Take off heat and place in brioche buns.  If using a grill, heat grill and cook burgers until internal temp reaches 165 degrees.  I wouldn’t recommend these right on the grill as they’ll fall through the grates, but if you have a grill pan, or some foil, cook them on there. I like some baby greens on my burger so those go on the bottom.  Place burger on top of lettuce, top with pickled jalapenos, and drizzle with as much honey as you’d prefer. Serve immediately and enjoy!
